Ski-in/ski-out has never looked so easy from just outside your Constellation home front door. The Living Room at The Ritz-Carlton is yet another great place to relax in close to your Lake Tahoe home.

Pianeta Raises the Bar and invites you to BYOR

July 11, 2012

There’s no doubt about it, Tahoe has some great eats. Whether you want to stay close to home at Constellation Residences and dine mid-mountain at Manzanita, hop on the Highland Gondola for tapas and wine at Petra or enjoy fresh sushi at Mukini, you don’t have to travel far for a great meal.

But minutes away in downtown Truckee you’ll find there’s one place that’ll have you wanting to return time and time again. An evening at Pianeta feels like a journey back in time paired with the Italian roots I never had. It is warm, charming and romantic. The food is excellent, and the service is top notch.  The staff was so warm and genuine – giving our table a bit of history about the building and its’ design, plus personal menu recommendations. Having grown up in Sonoma’s Wine County, I feel comfortable saying that the wine list doesn’t disappoint, either.

Our party of four sank into a comfy booth tucked under the stairwell and enjoyed nearly three hours of laughter, stories and pure dining bliss... I left knowing that this would be one Truckee spot that I would return.

We recommend starting with a Caprese Salad.  Pianeta’s is a place where history is remembered and memories are made. As you walk downstairs, you’ll notice open brick walls filled with stones. Reflecting its rich Truckee history is an invitation to BYOR (Bring Your Own Rock), and fill the wall with memories.

More History: During the 19th century the building was the Exchange Saloon and later the Shamrock Saloon.  In the early 1930s it was a restaurant owned by George Carter who as nicknamed “firecracker” because of his hot temper.  He was known to throw plates at the hired help and even at his customers.  It was also once the M & E Laundromat owned by Sarge Reynolds.

In 1976 the floor was dug out for expansion.  Various artifacts were found, including a Chinese opium bottle, leading to speculation that the basement was once an opium den.  The newly remodeled interior became a book and gift store called Extravagaria, owned by Jerry Alexander.  In 1977 it became Ernie’s Bistro and later, The Left Bank before becoming Pianeta.
