Take a Hike Tahoe
July 28, 2012
‘Take a Hike’ takes on a whole new meaning when you are exploring the outdoor wonder surrounding Lake Tahoe. Whether you are looking for family-friendly, Fido-friendly, a destination day-trip or the perfect place for a scenic shot, we’ve got the list for you.
There is so much beauty in Tahoe that sometimes it is hard to take it all in while engaged in outdoor activities such as skiing and mountain biking. Often the best way to experience all that Tahoe has to offer is to take a hike. When you are hiking among the trees, you are surrounded by the sights, sounds, fresh air and natural beauty that Tahoe has to offer. Majestic firs and pines all set to spectacular backdrops of Tahoe scenery allow those of us with busy lives to reflect and recharge our life-batteries or enjoy quiet moments connecting with family and friends.
It’s also great outdoor fun for the entire family, including Fido, as dogs are welcome on the trails at Northstar. Just be sure to keep your canine companion on a leash to protect the environment and respect other hikers in the area. There is something for everyone regardless of skill level or conditioning; nature hikes at Northstar can be as advanced or as leisurely as you make them. Northstar makes your hiking adventures easy with excellent resources, such as maps as well as a list of local hiking trails. They even offer guided hikes, perfect for a weekend family or solo trek.
Make a day of it! The greater Tahoe region has some excellent day trips for those looking to spend some quality time exploring the outdoors. North Lake Tahoe has an impressive list of trails with varying degrees of difficulty. A little farther south you will find a popular hike (leave Fido at home for this one), the Rubicon Trail, this local shoreline favorite begins an 8-mile (round trip) trail near the landmark, Vikingsholm off Hwy 89 on the NW side of Emerald Bay. Visitors and locals alike are posting plenty of Yelp accolades for this hiking destination:
“My favorite trail on the lake. Gorgeous views of Rubicon Bay and Emerald Bay with lots of woods and rock formations. Bring a camera, it's very photogenic.” Rick C.
Experienced hikers will enjoy easy access to the picturesque Pacific Crest Trail, which runs north and south due west of Northstar. The Pacific Crest Trail is a long-distance mountain hiking and equestrian trail. The southern terminus is at the California border with Mexico. The trail continues through the states of California, Oregon, and Washington before reaching its northern terminus in British Columbia, Canada. Park near Donner Pass Road, follow the Tahoe National Forest trail map and head due East for spectacular views from Castle Peak.
Love waterfalls? Try Horsetail Falls, where a 3 mile round-trip hike gets you up close with this spectacular Tahoe waterfall. You can venture on and climb high or enjoy the sights, it’s up to you.
“Looking down at the other mountain peaks made me realize that if I had ever used the word "breathtaking" to describe anything else before, I was surely mistaken. Just a few ways to describe the view and the feeling of accomplishment after hiking Horsetail Falls and scaling Pyramid Peak = awe-inspiring, hair-raising, heart-stopping, and overwhelmingly thrilling! Simply amazing.” Johanna C., Yelp
Looking for Lakeside views? See a variety of alpine lakes on Pacific Crest Trail at Echo Lakes! Take Highway 50 to Echo Summit and turn onto Johnson Pass Road. Stay left and the road will lead you to the parking area by Lower Echo Lake.
And don’t forget; no matter how long your outdoor adventure, be sure to pack snacks, water, appropriate footwear and sunscreen; it’s also a good idea to pack a hat as well.
