Falling for Fall, the Secret Season
October 01, 2013
Lake Tahoe locals know that autumn is one of the best times to enjoy all that the region has to offer. Whether you are admiring foliage or looking to enjoy a feast of festivals, fall is known as our “secret season”. Summer visitor traffic has tapered off, the weather allows for outings on the lake, adventures continue by hiking and biking, and local businesses have more time to reconnect with visitors before the start of winter.
Fall for fall this season
Here’s a short list of events and destinations that we know will have you swooning over the season…
Fall Festival Oct 12th
Tahoe Donner's third annual fall festival is on Saturday, Oct. 12 rom 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the Northwoods Clubhouse in Truckee. Enjoy arts and craft vendors, doggie dip, fun run, beer tasting, pumpkin patch, kids carnival area with games and food, as well as a rock wall and much more! Live entertainment, including a magician, and local performances will be staged throughout the event and live music by the Sneaky Creatures, a mischievous alt-gypsy swing sextet playing a blend of rock, jazz and Dixieland funk, will take place from 2:15 – 5 p.m. The expansive pumpkin patch is of course a highlight! Only $15 for an unlimited wristband or $1 per ticket.
Head to Apple Hill
Apple Hill off Hwy 50 features apples, bakeries, wineries and other activities. Enjoy wines and handcrafted beers in an incredible Sierra-soaked setting. Oct 24-31 offers a Haunted Nature-Trail, Nov 2 a Chestnut Festival and Nov 16 a Holiday Pie Tasting. This fall destination spot will become a family tradition.
Harvest Beer Dinner at Manzanita Oct 19th
On Oct. 19, the Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe Resort at Northstar hosts a Harvest Beer Dinner with cider tasting and a candy apple bar. On most evenings, the Ritz "marshmologist" will help guests combine exotic ingredients to create unique s'mores over their outdoor fire pits. Bring your family and friends for fall-themed activities including a candy apple bar, hot cider tasting and pumpkin painting in the backyard of the resort from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Harvest Beer Dinner will take place in Manzanita, the resort’s signature Lake Tahoe restaurant from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and features a three-course dinner inspired by fall with select pairings of seasonal beers. Fall Foliage Family Photo Shoot
One of the benefits to visiting the mountains in autumn is the opportunity to experience the leaves changing color. For a fall foliage family photo shoot, head north of Lake Tahoe to the Aspen Grove Trail at Tahoe Donner. The easily accessible trail runs from Tahoe Donner's Equestrian Center to a huge grove of aspens. If your timing is right, the trees will be bursting with colors from pumpkin orange to lemon yellow and candy-apple red. Tahoe colors peak anytime from late September to November, so call ahead for the latest reports. Read more: At high altitude Tahoe is always peak season
